Ketosis: Is it good for you on the long run?

Imagine converting the engine of your car from diesel to a gas engine. After some turbulence and efforts your car and driving experience may revert to the same but the fuel will be different. This is what happens on a keto diet.

The followers of the keto diet believe in the power of the body using its own fat burning system to lose significant weight. But it does have some serious side effects on the long run. The energy source is forced to shift from glycogen in the liver to ketones. The reason it has gained popularity is the results given by this diet. People get results in a very short period of time. But it is not something you can keep up or maintain once goals are reached. With sugar levels down there are numerous side effects-

1. Low carb diets could lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies- fruits eliminated, fibre very low causing indigestion, bloating.

2. May affect athletic performance.

3. Weight can be regained very easily.

4. It may damage blood vessels-enjoying a cheat day may blast the veins with glucose.

5. When used for a long period of time it raises the risk of stroke and heart failure.

It is important to look at what you are missing in a diet and what is really sustainable for you. You should be happy and satiated with what you are having. This would help keep the weight off. Before trying any new diet it is advisable to consult your doctor for advice and avoid jumping into it blindly.
